How to decide whether or not to use fractions.

Using the Fractions Feature

The Fractions feature in ReservationKey allows you to link multiple smaller units (fractions) to a larger unit (the whole). When one is booked, the related units are automatically blocked — preventing double-bookings and reducing manual work.

Example Scenario

Suppose you have three units configured in your system:

When the Whole House is booked, both the Upstairs and Downstairs should automatically become unavailable. Without using fractions, you would have to manually block the related units every time one was reserved.

Manual Method (Without Fractions)

If you do not use fractions, availability conflicts must be handled manually:

  1. When a reservation is made for one unit, open your calendar.
  2. Select the related units (for example, Upstairs and Downstairs).
  3. Change their Status to Unavailable.

While this method works, it can be time-consuming and prone to error.

Automated Method (Using Fractions)

To automate availability management, set up your smaller units as fractions of a larger unit.

  1. Go to the Properties tab.
  2. Click Fractions.
  3. Click Add Fraction.
  4. Enter a name (for example, “Upstairs” or “Downstairs”).
  5. In the Linked To field, select the parent unit (e.g., “Whole House”).
  6. Click Save.

Repeat this process for each fraction that should be linked to the main unit.

Viewing Fractions on the Calendar

To see all linked units together:

  1. Go to your Reservation Calendar.
  2. Set the filter to All Rooms and Fractions.

Now you will see the Whole House and its fractions listed together.

How Availability Syncs

This ensures accurate availability across related units without requiring manual adjustments.

When to Use Fractions

Fractions are most useful when you rent:

If your setup is simple or rarely overlaps, manual blocking may be sufficient. However, for properties frequently rented in parts and as a whole, fractions save time and prevent errors.

Summary

This feature is ideal for properties that can be booked either in full or by individual sections, such as houses with separate floors, duplexes, or villas with suites.
