Adding a Credit Card Surcharge

ReservationKey allows you to automatically add a surcharge (or “convenience fee”) to credit card payments to help offset processing costs. This fee can be displayed to guests on your reservation page and applied automatically when they pay by credit card.

Step 1: Access Payment Methods

1. Click the Website tab at the top of your account.
2. Select Payment Methods.
3. Either click Add Payment Method to create a new one, or click Edit next to an existing payment method you want to modify.

Step 2: Add a Surcharge Percentage

In this example, we’ll use Yapstone as the payment method, but the same process applies to all processors (such as Square, Stripe, or Authorize.net).

1. Find the field labeled Payment Manipulation Charge.
2. Enter the percentage you want to charge — for example, type 2.75.
3. In the dropdown next to it, select Percent (%) instead of Dollar ($).
4. If you want guests to see this fee on your Reservation Page, check the box for Show on Reservation Page.
5. Click Save Changes.

The surcharge will now be automatically added to all credit card payments processed through this payment method.

Step 3: Remove or Disable a Surcharge

To remove the surcharge or stop showing it on your booking page:

1. Go back to Website → Payment Methods.
2. Edit the payment method where the surcharge was added.
3. Change the Payment Manipulation Charge value to 0.
4. Uncheck the box for Show on Reservation Page.
5. Click Save Changes.

Step 4: Verify on Your Reservation Page

To confirm that the surcharge is being displayed correctly:

1. Open your Reservation Page.
2. Select a room and proceed to the payment section.

If the fee is enabled, you’ll see a line item that says something like:

Transaction Fee (2.75%) — $X.XX

If the surcharge has been removed, this line will no longer appear.

Notes & Best Practices

• Legal notice: Some regions restrict or prohibit adding credit card surcharges. Be sure to verify your local laws before enabling this feature.
• Consider naming the fee something neutral such as Processing Fee or Transaction Fee if you prefer.
• If you charge a flat fee instead of a percentage, change the type to Dollar ($) and enter the amount (e.g., 3.00).
